ITANAGAR, Feb 13: A mithun mela-cum-technology awareness was conducted in Ledum village near East-Siang district HQs Pasighat on Tuesday.
MLA Tatung Jamoh, in his inaugural address, lauded the efforts of Indian Council of Agricultural Research – National Research Centre on Mithun (ICAR-NRC-M) in collaboration with state’s Vety & AH Dept along with Ledum Village Authority.
The ICAR-NRC on Mithun in for popularizing scientific rearing of mithun through such regular events as this is the third one after Takelalung and Miren villages, he said. He urged the farmers to adopt the scientific practice for more profit. He congratulated GBs for motivating the farmers to bring a large number of mithun to the mela.
ICAR-NRCM director Dr. Abhijit Mitra earlier highlighted about several initiatives of the institute and stressed the need for use of improved mithun bulls and bulls with the neighboring villages to avoid inbreeding.
In all 400 farmers attended the mela with 100 mithuns, which were vaccinated against FMD and BQ; the villagers display their products in several stalls; ICAR-NRC displayed its technologies and package of practices.
Best mithun bulls, cows and heifers competitions were organized and cash prize with certificate were given to the winners. Moreover, barbed-wire, CGI sheet, gu boots, rain coat, and travis were given to Mithun Rearing Society to promote semi-intensive mithun rearing.
Regular vaccination, supplementation with e mineral mixture, use of good bulls and conservation of biggest bulls for breeding, diversified use of mithun as a source of meat, milk, leather were stressed by the scientists while interacting with farmers later.
Besides ICAR-NRC-M’s principal scientist (animal reproduction), CTO Dr. Kezhavitu Vurpu and Dr. MH Khan, former education director Tapong Talog, DVO Dr. Taggo, Bilat CO Oni Padun and Ledum GB Tayam Dupak, among others, were present.
Ledum is one of the cleanest villages in the district having 112 households and a population of little more than 500. It is one of the villages with high-density mithun population where people are mostly depending on mithun farming as a viable economic activity.
